Here’s a practical starter kit split into Essentials (bring these for a smooth first camp) and Nice to have (add as you go).

Essentials

  • Shelter & sleep: Tent (with poles, pegs, guy/anchor ropes), rubber mallet, groundsheet, camping chairs, stretcher or mattress, sleeping bag + pillow. (You want to sleep well)

  • Cold & water: Cooler with ice (or a camping fridge if you have one), large water container + drinking water.

  • Power & light: Long extension cord, multi-plug, rechargeable headlamp/torch or bring spare batteries.

  • Clean-up & storage: Dish soap, dishcloths/sponge/scrubber, rubbish bags, zip-locks, foil, plastic containers.

  • Hygiene: Toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, basic toiletries, insect repellent, sunscreen.

  • Safety & basics: Small first-aid kit, duct tape, cable ties, multi-tool/pliers, broom & dustpan (or small shovel/brush).

  • Handy extras: Clothesline + pegs, small folding table, car phone charger, printed/ saved directions/booking confirmation.

Nice to have

  • Shade & comfort: Shade tarp/gazebo or umbrella, entry mat (for sandy sites), extra camp table, camp rug.

  • Lighting: Gas/LED lantern, string/fairy lights.

  • Coffee & treats: Jaffle/jaffel iron, kettle braai, moka/espresso pot, immersion coffee press.

  • Tools & vehicle: Jumper cables, tyre repair kit, tow rope, warning triangle, spare fuses, epoxy putty, spare hose, basic spanners/screwdrivers/spark plug socket.

  • Leisure: Binoculars, camera, power bank, small speaker/radio, cards/games, fishing tackle, ball & paddles, field guides.

  • Navigation/comm (remote trips): Paper map, power bank/inverter; satellite phone only if you’re going very remote.

Tip for new campers: start with the essentials and build slowly—that’s how you avoid bringing a car full of “why did we buy this?” Also ask in the group; plenty of guys have duplicate gear they’re happy to offload at a good price.
